The Nissan Leaf has been released to the public with the first delivery, and future production of the model will continue at a slow rate. The first Leaf was sold at a North Bay Nissan dealership in California. Later, the model will be available at Nissan Trenton dealerships and other dealerships throughout the U.S. The Nissan Leaf is a competitor to the Toyota Prius and other hybrid and electric models. The Prius can be purchased from Toyota Golden Valley dealerships among others throughout the U.S. and world.

Honda also produces a number of models including the Fit Hybrid and the Accord Hybrid which can be purchased from Executive Honda dealerships and others. Nissan is a late entry into the EV and hybrid market with its Leaf model, however the Leaf is highly anticipated and expected to sell large quantities throughout the world. There are expected to be very few Leaf models initially available. About 20,000 customers in the United States have reserved a Leaf model.

Nissan is not expected to release large numbers of the model out of caution because of the high cost of production of the vehicle and also the uncertainty of demand. The Leaf is built in Japan at Nissan’s Oppama production facility. There will be another shipment of Leaf models that will reach the United States on December 23. Steady production of the model is not expected to begin until around the second quarter of 2011. The Leaf reservations will not all be filled at once, and they will gradually be filled up until the summer of 2011.

Nissan may be also be slow at releasing Leaf models in order to build up anticipation for the vehicle. The Nissan Leaf is certainly one of the most anticipated releases in recent history, but Nissan may look to increase the market’s demand by limiting initial production numbers.
